Carl Johan Thyselius (born June 8, 1811 in Österhaninge , Haninge municipality , † January 11, 1891 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish politician and Prime Minister of Sweden (Sveriges State Minister) .

Studies and professional career

The son of the future bishop Pehr Thyselius initially studied at Uppsala University from 1827 . Like many other personalities of his time, he combined his professional career with political activities. First he took over some offices within the administration of justice before he was judge (Justitieråd) at the Supreme Court of Sweden (Högsta domstolen) from 1856 to 1860 .

After serving as cabinet minister for the first time, he later became President of the Department of Law, Finance and Administration (Kammarkollegiet) , Sweden's oldest public institution, from 1864 to 1875 .

Political career

Thyselius began his political career on November 2, 1860 when he took over the office of minister of church (Ecklesiastikminister) , who, however, also performed the duties of minister of education. He held this office until 1863 under the co-prime ministers Louis De Geer and Ludvig Manderström .

From 1863 to 1864 he was the district president of the Kronoberg district . He also represented this district from 1868 to 1886 as a member of the First Chamber of the Reichstag .

In 1875 he rejoined the government under Co-Prime Ministers De Geer and Oscar Björnstjerna and this time took over the management of the Civil Ministry (Civilminister) , which is responsible for trade, industry and shipping. He kept this office after the government reform of 1876, which led to De Geer becoming the first sole prime minister. Together with De Geer, he resigned on April 19, 1880 from his office.

After De Geer's successor Arvid Posse resigned on June 13, 1883, he took over the post of Prime Minister himself at the request of King Oskar II . At times he took over the management of the civil ministry again. He was the first leading minister who did not come from the nobility , and at the same time, at 72 years of age, the oldest prime minister in Sweden to date.

On May 16, 1884, however, he resigned after only eleven months of reign.
