Oscar von Sydow

Oscar Fredrik von Sydow (born July 12, 1873 in Kalmar , † August 19, 1936 ) was a Swedish politician and Prime Minister of Sweden (Sveriges State Minister) .

Studies and professional career

The son of a magistrate's secretary began to study law at Uppsala University in 1890 , which he graduated with a diploma in 1894 .

He then became an employee and later a judge at the Svea appellate court , where he was promoted to assessor in 1907 and to judge councilor ( hovrättsråd ) in 1909 .

State Secretary, Government President and Minister

In 1906 he interrupted his work at the Svea Court of Appeal and was then at the same time chief of the expedition (State Secretary) in the Ministry of Public Administration (Civildepartementet) until 1911. At that time, this ministry was responsible for trade, industry, communication, provincial administration and provincial parishes ( Landsting ), cities and municipalities, social affairs, as well as post and telegraphy.

Afterwards he became district president ( Landshövding ) of the province Norrbotten in 1911 . He held this office until 1914.

On February 17, 1914, Prime Minister Hjalmar Hammarskjöld himself appointed him Minister of Public Administration. He held this office until the end of his tenure on March 30, 1917. The most important event during his activity as minister was the establishment of the Unemployment Commission ( Arbetslöshetskommissions ).

Subsequently, he was from 1917 to 1934 district president of the province of Gothenburg and Bohus .

Prime Minister

After the resignation of Prime Minister Louis de Geer because of his defeat in a vote of no confidence, he was appointed Prime Minister by King Gustav V on February 23, 1921 , after the former Prime Minister Karl Hjalmar Branting twice refused to form a government.

A law abolishing the death penalty was passed during his reign . On October 13, 1921, however, he had to resign as prime minister after the Social Democratic Party had voted against important finance and defense laws despite previous agreements.

From 1934 until his death he was head of the royal court as Reichsmarschall .
