Edmund Knorr (born October 11, 1885 in Ratheim , † January 9, 1979 in Erkelenz ) was a German teacher , home keeper , conservationist , hunter and ornithologist .

Life

Edmund Knorr worked as a primary school teacher from 1905 to 1952, from 1908 he worked in Erkelenz, where he was appointed rector of the Catholic primary school in 1932 .

He made a name for himself above all with his voluntary work for nature conservation in the district of Erkelenz : from 1929 to 1935 he worked there as district commissioner for natural monument preservation , then from 1936 to 1970 as nature conservation officer for the district. Knorr, a member of the German Ornithological Society (DO-G) since 1927 , was a recognized ornithologist. As such, he mainly dealt with the avifauna of the Lower Rhine . In 1967 he published the book The Birds of the Erkelenz District. A contribution to the bird fauna of the Lower Rhine . Knorr's preparations were later exhibited in the bird museum of the NABU local group Wegberg eV, which was located at the Tüschenbroicher mill for a few years . From 1956 to 1962 he was a district hunting advisor.

Knorr always saw nature conservation as part of maintaining the homeland , which is why he was heavily involved in this area. In 1948 he was one of the co-founders of the Erkelenzer Lande Heimatverein and worked from 1950 to 1965 as a district home and archive administrator for the district or the district of Erkelenz. A slide collection he built up on soil science, landscape, flora, animal science and the cultural history of the Erkelenzer Lande is now in the Heinsberg district archive.

The extensive work of Edmund Knorr has been recognized several times. The Federal President awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon in 1960 and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class in 1965 . In the same year he became an honorary member of the Society of Rhenish Ornithologists, honorary member of the Heimatverein der Erkelenzer Lande and the Niederrhein Association awarded him the Albert Steeger plaque . The city of Erkelenz made him an honorary citizen in 1976 . The German Hunting Protection Association (DJV) awarded him the Silver Medal of Merit.

Edmund Knorr died on January 9, 1979 at the age of 93 in Erkelenz.
