Mason Elliott Phelps (born December 7, 1885 in Chicago , Illinois , † September 2, 1945 in Lake Forest , Illinois) was an American golfer .
biography
Mason Phelps came from a wealthy family and played golf at the Midlothian Country Club . At the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis , he was Olympic champion with the Western Golf Association in team competition . In the individual, however, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Francis Newton .
From 1907 to 1912 he took part in the US amateur . In 1909 he lost in the semi-finals to Robert Gardner and in 1912 in the quarter-finals to Jerry Travers . He achieved his greatest victories in 1908 and 1910 when he won the Western Amateur .
Phelps founded Pheoll Manufacturing Co. after graduating from university .
