Heinrich Arnhold (1908)

Heinrich Arnhold , complete Heinrich Gustav Arnhold (born July 22, 1885 in Dresden , † October 10, 1935 in Dresden) was a German banker , collector, patron and Esperantist .

Live and act

Arnhold came from the Dresdner banking family; Georg Arnhold was his father, Max Arnhold his uncle. Both had built the banking house Gebrüder Arnhold into the largest private bank in Saxony.

His upbringing was shaped by the upper class and progressive atmosphere of his parents' house. In 1907 he took part in the 16th World Peace Congress in Munich with his father, a patron of the German Peace Society . He soon learned, stimulated by Bertha Suttner , Esperanto . His teacher was the Esperanto poet Marie Hankel from Dresden . In 1908 he was one of the organizers of the 4th Esperanto World Congress in Dresden. From 1911 to 1914 he was the first chairman of the Saxon Esperanto Association, and from 1912 he was also the treasurer of the German Esperanto Association .

Heinrich Arnhold studied law and was established in 1908 at the University of Leipzig Dr. jur. PhD. In 1910 he joined the bank as a partner .

In 1914 he married Lisa, née Mattersdorff (1890–1972), also from a Dresden banking family. The couple had five children: Ruth, later married Steiner (1914-2001), Sigrid, later married Edwards († before 1992), Rainer († 1993), Esther, later married Seligmann (1918 - May 5, 2000) and Heinrich- Hartmut ( Henry H. Arnhold ). The family home on Tiergartenstrasse was a social meeting point and venue for the Arnhold discussion evenings . In 1927, Arnhold had the garden of the house redesigned by Erwin Barth . Heinrich and Lisa Arnhold built up an important collection of modern art and, inspired by the family's investments in the porcelain and ceramics industry, an extensive collection of Meissen porcelain .

Arnhold was a co-founder of the Society of Patrons and Friends of the Technical University of Dresden (GFF) and was made an honorary senator for his longstanding commitment to the university.

He first tried to defend himself against the beginning of the persecution of the Jews , both legally and through petitions. He suffered strokes in 1934 and 1935, of which he died. His death was later recognized as due to persecution. With the help of her brother-in-law Kurt Arnhold , his wife Lisa managed to save the family and the porcelain collection first to Switzerland and then via Portugal and Brazil to the USA .

Afterlife

Since 2001, the son Henry Arnhold has enabled a series of lectures and discussions, which is organized jointly with the American Academy in Berlin by the Dresden Heritage eV and bears the name Lisa and Heinrich Arnhold Lecture . The events take place twice a year.
