Count Aleksey Uvarov ( Russian Алексей Сергеевич Уваров , scientific transliteration. Alexei Uvarov Sergeevič ; February * 28 . Jul / 12. March  1825 greg. In Saint Petersburg , † December 29, 1884 jul. / 10. January  1885 greg. ) Was a Russian archaeologist .

Life

Uvarow was the son of Count Sergei Semjonowitsch Uvarow (1786–1855). He has made a name for himself by describing his archaeological journey on the northern coast of the Black Sea (Petersburg 1852) and has made a great contribution as the founder of the archaeological congress on prehistoric archeology, which has been held every three years since 1868. He donated the Uvarov Prize (3,000 rubles), which is awarded annually by the Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg on October 7th for a number of the best historical works.

On January 14, 1858, he married the fifteen years younger Praskowja Sergejewna Uvarowa (1840-1924).

Uvarow founded the Imperial Moscow Archaeological Society in 1864 and became its chairman. After his death in January 1885, his widow took over the chairmanship in May 1885 and held it until the October Revolution of 1917. He was one of the initiators of the founding of the History Museum in Moscow. Uwarow was a corresponding member of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory .
