The Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso ( Spanish : Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso , short: PUCV ) is a university under papal law in Valparaíso ( Chile ).

history

The Catholic University of Valparaíso was founded on September 21, 1925. In 2003 the university was recognized as a Pontifical University by decree by Pope John Paul II . Grand Chancellor is the respective bishop of the diocese Valparaíso ; he is usually represented by a Vice Grand Chancellor. From 2008 the diocesan priest Dietrich Lorenz , who has been teaching at the University's Philosophical Institute since 1997, has been Vice Grand Chancellor. After his resignation on November 23, 2018, no new Vice Grand Chancellor was appointed; The diocesan administrator of Valparaíso, Auxiliary Bishop Pedro Ossandón Buljevic , is the Pro-Grand Chancellor . The rector of the university has been the economist Claudio Elórtegui Raffo , father of the well-known Chilean journalist Claudio Elórtegui Gómez (* 1976), who also teaches at the university, since 2010 .

A cooperation agreement has existed with the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg since 2001 .
