Ellen Gilchrist
Ellen Gilchrist (born February 20, 1935 in Vicksburg , Mississippi ) is an American writer .
Life
Ellen Gilchrist is the daughter of an engineer. She spent her childhood in the Mississippi Delta on her maternal grandfather's plantation and gained early access to literature through her mother. She married for the first time when she was 19; three more marriages followed, all of which ended in divorce. In 1967 she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi . From 1976 to 1979 she worked for the " Vieux Carre Courier ", a newspaper in New Orleans . In 1976 she took up postgraduate studies at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and began writing literary texts. After a first volume of poetry, she has been publishing volumes of short stories and novels in rapid succession since the 1980s , most of which are set in the southern states and often depict episodes from the life of the fictional Manning family in a very lively and humorous way. From 1984 to 1985, Ellen Gilchrist was a news editor and commentator for National Public Radio in Washington, DC Ellen Gilchrist is a member of the Authors Guild .
