Georg Vierling

Georg Vierling (born September 5, 1820 in Frankenthal , † June 1, 1901 in Wiesbaden ) was a German composer , organist and conductor.

Life

Georg Vierling first learned from his father, the organist Johann Jakob Vierling (1797–1867). He then studied with the court organist Christian Heinrich Rinck in Darmstadt and from 1842 with Adolf Bernhard Marx in Berlin. In 1847 he became organist in Frankfurt (Oder) , later also head of the local singing academy , where he was able to perform Bach oratorios and passion music together with the musicians of the theater band. In 1853 he became head of the Liedertafel in Mainz .

Vierling worked in Berlin as a composer, conductor and private teacher from 1854. In 1857 he founded the Bach Association , which he headed until 1868, and in 1859 he became royal Prussian music director. In 1882 he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin and later elected to its Senate. In addition to numerous honors that have been bestowed on him, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Berlin.

His compositions are based on his classical predecessors, but have a contemporary modern conception. His oratorios Constantin and The Robbery of the Sabine Women found international recognition. Vierling wrote songs , vocal compositions for mixed choir with and without accompaniment, piano and organ works , overtures and a symphony . Vierling's particular merit was his commitment to the musical life in Frankfurt / Oder and to the performance of Bach's vocal works.

He was buried in the old St. Jacobi cemetery in Berlin.
