Song board
A song table is originally a round table based on the ideal model of King Arthur or Arthur's round table , one of like-minded friends "who, different in occupation and position, were united in an ideal attitude, especially in an enthusiastic love of singing" (cf. Hermann Kuhlo : History of the Zelterian Liedertafel). The Zeltersche Liedertafel in Berlin was the oldest of its kind, which arose from this ideal idea. A large number of song tables were later founded based on their model in German-speaking countries. However, the original ideal of the Liedertafel was more and more lost in favor of the art of performing. In later Liedertafel, the focus was not only on socializing, but also on performance practice, while the Zelterian Liedertafel saw itself more as a closed circle and did not appear openly.
Today countless exist choirs under the name Liedertafel, a special designation of choral societies in the German-speaking countries, which publicly usually occur on different occasions. One exception is the song table of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin, which was revived in 2006 and, in the tradition of the Zelterian Association, sees itself as an exclusive meeting place for poets, composers and singers.
Zeltersche Liedertafel
Founded on December 21, 1808 by Carl Friedrich Zelter , the director of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin , and other members, it was the first civil male choir in German history.
At the monthly meetings of the all-male society, “at a frugal meal in German cheerfulness and cosiness, noble sociability was cultivated and songs were sung that the own members created as poets or composers”. The focus of Zelter's song table was this spirit and this patriotic disposition - in view of the difficult warlike Napoleonic times - and not an excellent vocal performance. Public appearances were almost completely avoided.
The directors of the Sing-Akademie since Zelter were also masters of the Liedertafel. Only Georg Schumann , after Hermann Kawerau's resignation from the position of director of the Sing-Akademie and his election as table master in 1901, only took over the post of master craftsman after Kawerau's death on July 11, 1909. The number of members, who had to be either poets , singers or composers , as well as the external impact of this song table remained limited. Little is known about the exact time or the circumstances of its dissolution.
