Paul Hermann Kawerau (born July 24, 1852 in Berlin , † July 1, 1909 in Thal in Thuringia ) was a German musician and music teacher .

Life

The father of the German teacher and school reformer Siegfried Kawerau first studied theology in Berlin. Only later did he choose the art of music to be his life's profession. After his musical training he worked as a singing teacher at the Royal Wilhelms-Gymnasium . From 1879 to 1901 he was the successor of his father Martin Kawerau as organist and cantor at St. Matthäuskirche in Berlin and as cathedral organist . In his official position he was appointed professor and royal music director.

In 1871 he became a member of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin and appeared there between 1876 and 1887 as a tenor soloist . In 1891 he was appointed vice director of the Singakademie, which he held until 1909. Member since 1877, Beimeister in 1897, master of the Zelterschen Liedertafel from 1901 to 1909 , in 1900, on the advice of Martin Blumner, he renounced the candidacy as director of the Singakademie, thus clearing the way for the composer Georg Schumann and thus for a new beginning at the 1791 founded Choir Association.

Kawerau was with Maria, geb. Niemeyer, married.

Hermann Kawerau died in 1909 at the age of 56 and was buried in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Schöneberg near Berlin. In the course of the leveling of the cemetery carried out by the National Socialists in 1938/1939, Kawerau's remains were reburied in the south-west cemetery in Stahnsdorf , where his tomb has been preserved.
