Fritz Harrer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich "Fritz" Harrer (born July 16, 1930 in Munich ; † April 16, 2019 in Burghausen ) was a German politician . As a member of the CSU , he was a member of the Bavarian state parliament from 1970 to 1984 . From 1984 to 1990 he was mayor of the city of Burghausen.

Harrer grew up with his grandmother in Peißenberg during the turmoil of World War II . After the end of the war, he had to leave school as a teenager and help support the family in the city's coal mines. Only later did he catch up with his Abitur and completed an apprenticeship as a postmaster in Freising . After a few transfers, he finally came to Burghausen in 1961 with his wife Maria. There he was promoted to the upper class postal service and was promoted to senior postmaster.

Harrer came to politics rather by chance: when the local association of the CSU was looking for a secretary, he was chosen despite his initially negative attitude. In 1966, when he was elected to the Burghausen City Council, he took on his first political mandate. After his election as CSU district chairman in the Altötting district, he joined the Bavarian state parliament for the first time in 1970. Harrer was re-elected in the 1974, 1978 and 1982 state elections. In total, he was a member of the Bavarian Parliament for 14 years.

When Burghausen's mayor Georg Miesgang became seriously ill in 1984 , Harrer gave up his state parliament mandate to succeed Miesgang in his hometown. He remained mayor until 1990, but had to admit defeat to his challenger Hans Steindl (SPD) in the 1990 election .

After the end of his political career, Harrer continued to work on behalf of the Hanns Seidel Foundation for three years to help set up the district offices in Saxony .

In 1980, Harrer was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit for his services .
