history

Place name

The following forms of name are mentioned for Wedelingerode, among others:

  • 1174-1195: Widerincheroth
  • 1178: Wideriggeroth
  • 1273: Wedelingerothe
  • 1312: Wederingerode

The village is a clearing site with the ending -ingerode . The basic word Wedder , which was shifted to a Weddel- due to assimilation processes that can be observed more frequently in the case of -ingerode -names , is derived from a personal name Widuheri . In Old Saxon widu- means “wood” and heri means something like “army, crowd, people”.

Local history

On the basis of surface finds, the beginning of settlement in the Carolingian period can be assumed; the place is mentioned for the last time in 1380 and fell into desolation in the following years.
