The Kukeriulenburg , also known as Sachsenring , is a hill fort about 1 km north of Gielde in the Wolfenbüttel district .
The ramparts are located on the Burgberg, an elongated ridge with a flank that slopes more sharply to the northeast than in the southwest. Today it presents itself as an oval fortification of 65 × 105 m with an area of 0.4 ha. The wall is up to 8 m wide and 1.5 m high. In the north-west there is an opening in the wall, next to which there is a 10 m wide depression. Except on the steep northeast side, the rampart surrounds a 7 m wide and 1.5 m deep ditch.
In the interior of the wall there is a rectangular 10 by 25 m elevation in the southern section with an excavation in the eastern part. According to an older description, to the south of the elevation there were two walls of a building with the dimensions of about 10 × 7.5 m. To the north of it there was a brick well 1.6 m in diameter.
Oral records attest to the use of the area as a cattle ring in recent times. The designation as Kukeriulenburg or Sachsenring, on the other hand, indicates older traditions and means that there was probably an early medieval fortress at this point , which was related to the royal palace of Werla , 4.2 km to the east . The location and shape of the Kukeriulenburg also suggest that it dates back to the early Middle Ages.
