Hetelde is a deserted area in the Feldmark of the village of Gielde in the municipality of Schladen-Werla in the Wolfenbüttel district , Lower Saxony .

The desert is about 1.2 kilometers southeast of the Gielder village church on the Hetelberg , a hill between Harly and Oderwald .

history

Place name

A name interpretation is difficult due to the late tradition: The determinant, obscured by metathesis, can mean both -ede and -lede . There is probably a reference to ancient Germanic * haþ- "hill" and * hliþō "side, heap, hill, terrain slope", which would refer to the location of Heteldes on a mountain spur.

Local history

Evidence of the settlement of the place was excavated on the eastern slope of the Hetelberg, which point to a main settlement period from the 1st to the 7th century AD. In the period up to the fall of the desert in the 13./14. In the 19th century, the houses were repeatedly built elsewhere, so that there is a strong spread of the settlement area.
