The Vienenburg – Goslar railway is a main line opened in 1866 between Vienenburg and Goslar on the northern edge of the Harz .

history

Passenger train from Goslar to Oker (around 1910)

The Hanover State Railroad was opened on March 23, 1866.

In the 1930s, there was an increasing number of supra-regional freight trains running on the route, as the single- track Vienenburg – Langelsheim line had reached its load limit.

Since the Vienenburg – Oker section had lost much of its importance - the majority of passenger trains between Vienenburg and Goslar ran via Bad Harzburg - the second track on this section was dismantled in the 1980s.

For the route between Vienenburg and Goslar, there were specific plans for integration into the route network of the planned RegioStadtBahn Braunschweig . To this end, the number of trains on this section of the route should be increased in accordance with the more frequent train schedule of the RegioStadtBahn. The planned line should run with diesel hybrid light rail vehicles to Uelzen and in Braunschweig drive on light rail tracks through the city center. The entire project was originally supposed to be completed by 2014. The project failed in 2010 because the cost-effectiveness of the concept was no longer given due to the significantly increased vehicle procurement costs.

In order to increase the attractiveness of the lines even without the tram, the ZGB instead pursued the implementation of the “Regional Railway Concept 2014+”. This provided for new vehicles and a wing train concept at Vienenburg station for the Braunschweig – Vienenburg – Bad Harzburg / Goslar regional train line.

The disused trainman's house between Oker and Vienenburg was the victim of a fire in July 2016.

route

The 12.8-kilometer route is single-track between Vienenburg and Oker. Most of the route follows the Oker River . The Oker – Goslar section has been expanded to two tracks. The desert areas of Düringerode and Wenderode are located close to the railway line at about kilometer 5 .

business

The OHE subsidiary erixx has been using the route since the timetable change in December 2014 . Diesel railcars of the type LINT  54 are used. The trains run every hour as RB 43 from Goslar via Oker to Vienenburg, where there is a coupling with the RB 42 from Bad Harzburg. Both parts of the train then continue to Braunschweig Hbf. In addition, there are services provided by Abellio Rail Mitteldeutschland , which offers two-hour connections from Goslar to Halle (Saale) and Magdeburg . On the Oker – Goslar section , the RE 10 Bad Harzburg– Hanover operated by erixx (without a stop in Oker) and the RB 82 operated by DB Regio Nord to Göttingen and Kreiensen .

In addition, a few freight trains, mostly loaded with steel, run along the route every day.

Planning

The regional association for the greater Braunschweig area is examining the relocation of the RB 43 Goslar – Braunschweig line via Salzgitter-Bad instead of Vienenburg as part of the northern Harz concept. The alternative would be to upgrade to a double-track section between Oker and Vienenburg. The reason is the delays of the lines RB 43, RE 4 and RE 21, which overlap in the single-track section Oker – Vienenburg.
