history
The station is on the Vienenburg – Goslar railway line, which was opened in 1866 . The Oker – Bad Harzburg railway has been branching here since 1912 . 1.7 kilometers further east on the route to Bad Harzburg was the Oker Ost train station ( 51 ° 55 ′ N , 10 ° 30 ′ E ). At the end of the Second World War , the Oker station was the end of a death march from the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp near Nordhausen . The prisoners were driven through the Harz Mountains in a forced march for around a month before they reached the station building on April 8, 1945. Among others, the French writer André Mouton took part , after whom the secondary school Oker (today's Adolf Grimme comprehensive school ) was dedicated in the post-war period . According to reports, between 50 and 100 inmates were shot dead in the train station. To commemorate this event, a stele with a glass plaque was inaugurated at the train station on April 23, 2001. The station building has been privately owned since 2011.
Renovation 2017/18
In April 2016, the Zweckverband Greater Braunschweig announced that it would convert the Oker train station to ensure accessibility . Between 2017 and 2018, the level of the main platform and the central platform was increased over their length of 170 meters from 38 to 55 centimeters in order to enable a stepless change. The underpass was equipped with a tactile guidance system for the visually impaired and an elevator was installed to the central platform. Furthermore, the lighting was renewed, information showcases were set up and weather shelters were set up for both platforms.
The investments were initially estimated at around 4.5 million euros and were financed from the future investment program (ZIP; status: 2017) financed by the ZGB, the federal government and DB Station & Service . In total, the costs after completion of the work amounted to 5.4 million euros.
On December 5, 2018, the renovation work was completed and the station was opened to the public by the Lower Saxony Minister of Transport, Bernd Althusmann .
