In 1999 he took over the research and development department of the pharmaceutical company Merckle / Ratiopharm. After the company hit the headlines due to a public prosecutor's investigation into bribery of doctors, Merckle moved to the company's management in November 2005. In autumn 2006, Merckle established the World In Balance foundation .

In June 2008 Merckle joined the supervisory board of Gruschwitz Textilwerke AG, Leutkirch im Allgäu, as the majority shareholder , and was responsible for its chairmanship from October 2008. In March 2009 Merckle took over the sole management of the Austrian glass tile manufacturer Villiglas, Sittersdorf , which he resigned in December 2011.

Philipp Merckle is married to Anne and has five children.

Public performances

As Ratiopharm boss, Merckle appeared personally in TV advertising, side by side with Karlheinz Böhm . The company passed 1 cent on to the Africa Foundation for every drug package sold.

In May / June 2007 he performed together with Arved Fuchs as part of a “departure tour” initiated by his company in order to make his ideas of business ethics known.
