The Willingen Train Station is the station of the north Hessian community Willingen in Upland , the northeastern part of the Rothaargebirge . It is located on the Wabern – Brilon Wald railway line, known as the “Uplandbahn” in this area, not far from the Hessian / North Rhine-Westphalian border.

history

In the spring of 1913, the construction of the Uplandbahn line between Brilon Wald and Korbach began in several sections . On October 1st of the following year, the Brilon Wald – Willingen section was opened to traffic. On April 1, 1917, the last stagecoach began its journey in order to leave the field to the railroad in future. One day later, with the opening of the Usseln –Willingen section, the almost 90 kilometer long Wabern – Brilon Wald railway line was completely completed.

A fully loaded ammunition train with 28 cars, which was parked in Willingen train station, exploded on March 20, 1945 after an air raid . All houses in the immediate vicinity were damaged and some were uninhabitable. Pieces of debris flew into the Ruhr valley far to the west . On March 29, 1945 Willingen was supported by a coming from the south column of tanks of the US Army occupied without a fight.

As part of the reactivation of the Lower Edertal Railway, which was closed in 1987, in September 2015, the RB 55 line, which had previously operated between Korbach and Brilon Wald, was replaced by the RB 42 line, which runs continuously between Brilon Stadt and Marburg (Lahn) .

Tracks

Willingen station has a total of three tracks, making it the largest and most important intermediate station of the Korbach – Brilon Wald Uplandbahn. Tracks 1 and 2 have a central platform between them, which is barrier-free with a platform height of 55 cm . Track 2 is the continuous main track of the Uplandbahn, while track 1 is a sideline . Platform 3 , without a platform, has a buffer stop in the western area of the station and can only be reached from and in the direction of Korbach. However, it is not required as planned.

business

The train station, which is centrally located in the heart of Willingen, is on the Uplandbahn ( railway line Wabern – Brilon Wald ), which is part of the Kurhessenbahn regional network .

Previous connections

Until the mid- 1970s , long-distance trains ran on the Uplandbahn , including to Amsterdam and the Heckeneilzug between Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main . The latter connection disappeared from the course books in 1979, while the D-Zug pair Bad Wildungen -Amsterdam ran until 1991. Since then there has been no long-distance traffic in Willingen.

Until mid-2015, the regional train line RB 55 ran between Korbach and Brilon Wald every two hours , which since the reopening of the Almetalbahn section Brilon Wald – Brilon Stadt on December 11, 2011, has also operated sporadically via Brilon Wald to Brilon Stadt. In addition, the RB 55 regional express trains on the RE 4 line ran between Brilon Stadt and Kassel in individual time slots and had to change the direction of travel in Korbach .

Current connections

In the 2020 timetable, trains on line RB 42 will run every two hours via Willingen from Brilon Stadt via Brilon Wald , Willingen, Korbach and Frankenberg to Marburg (Lahn) . In the afternoon there is a compression of the cycle.

Since Willingen is an important winter sports location, numerous special trains from the Dortmund / Hagen area to Willingen are used, especially in the winter half-year , so that there are significantly more journeys to the Brilon Forest at this time than in the rest of the year.
