The Münster – Rheine line is a double-track , electrified main line in North Rhine-Westphalia . It runs from Münster to Rheine .
It was built by the Royal Westphalian Railway Company (KWE) financed by the Prussian state .
history
The KWE first built its main line from Hamm to Warburg in the 1850s . After taking over the Münster-Hammer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft and its railway line to Münster in 1855 , it built it further north to Rheine .
With the opening of its line on June 23, 1856, it was connected to the Hannoversche Westbahn, which was inaugurated at the same time, at Rheine station and access to the North Sea port in Emden via the Emsland line .
A good ten years later, the Rheinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft also reached Rheine station during the construction of its North Sea route from Duisburg main station to Quakenbrück , making it an important railway junction in north-west Germany.

As part of the platform modernization in Rheine, the disused track 8 and the platform edge were reactivated. This measure is intended to increase the capacity at Rheine station, which will reduce the scheduling conflicts between long-distance and local transport. As a result of this measure, the RE 7 regional express line will again be able to travel to Rheine every hour from December 2015. More than 16,100 passengers use the trains on the route every day.
The Zweckverband Nahverkehr Westfalen-Lippe (NWL) writes in its local transport plan that the rail connection to the Münster / Osnabrück airport should be checked. One variant provides for a new section that branches off the Münster – Rheine line and can be approached via switch connections from the direction of Münster and Rheine. In addition, the Zweckverband calls for the establishment of an additional platform edge in Münster Zentrum-Nord and the establishment of a platform changing operation in the section Münster Hauptbahnhof and Münster Zentrum Nord. These measures are intended to increase the capacity of the heavily used section. This, together with the leveling of the route to Enschede, means that some regional trains cannot stop in Münster Zentrum Nord. The required additional platform and the additional track at the Münster Zentrum Nord train station were inaugurated on May 7, 2018 and should enable every half hour in the future.

Long-distance transport
In long-distance passenger rail transport , intercity trains on line 35 run every two hours from Norddeich Mole or Emden outer harbor via Emden , Rheine , Münster , Wanne-Eickel , Gelsenkirchen , Oberhausen , Duisburg , Düsseldorf , Cologne , Bonn , Remagen and Andernach to Koblenz over the entire length Route. Individual trains continue to run via Mainz , Mannheim and Heidelberg to Stuttgart or Konstanz .
Regional traffic
In local rail transport , the entire length of the route or the section between Münster Hauptbahnhof and Münster Zentrum Nord is served by the following Regional Express and Regionalbahn lines:
As a result of various Europe-wide tenders, there have been significant changes in local transport lines since December 2015. Since the timetable change in December 2015, National Express has been operating the RE 7 line. The company took over the line from DB Regio and is using new Bombardier Talent 2 vehicles . When operations began, an hourly service was reintroduced between Münster and Rheine, which had to be thinned out to two-hourly intervals in 2006 due to scheduling problems with subsequent intercity routes.
Also in December 2015, Westfalenbahn took over the operation of the RE 15 line between Münster and Emden from DB Regio and is using new Stadler FLIRT vehicles .
In addition, the eurobahn was able to secure the operation of the lines RB 65 and RB 68 as part of the tender for the Teutoburg Forest network for 15 years. With the timetable change in December 2017, the company will take over operations from the Westfalenbahn and use Stadler FLIRT vehicles . With the timetable change in December 2015, the RB 68 line was merged with the RB 65 line, so that only one regional train line runs between Münster and Rheine, but this line is compressed to every half hour during the week.
