Uzi Even
Uzi Even ( Hebrew עוזי אבן, Born October 18, 1940 in Haifa ) is an Israeli professor of chemistry at Tel Aviv University and a politician.
Even, who comes from an immigrant Eastern European Jewish family, studied at the Technion after completing his schooling and obtained a B.Sc. and M.Sc. as well as the Ph.D. at Tel Aviv University . He specialized in spectroscopy . After successfully completing his studies and serving in the Israeli army, Even became a professor of chemistry at Tel Aviv University.
In 1993, he publicly stated in front of the Knesset that the Israel Defense Forces had fired him during his military service and revealed his sexual orientation after discovering his homosexuality . His statements led to a change of course in the government under Yitzhak Rabin , which allowed homosexual people to serve in the army. In 1995 Even got his employer, Tel Aviv University, to grant rights to his partner.
Even is politically active in the Meretz-Jachad party . In 1999 he narrowly missed the entry into the Knesset as a member of the Knesset, which he succeeded in the replacement procedure in 2002 when the member Amnon Rubinstein resigned from his seat. Even became the first openly gay MP in the Knesset. In the parliamentary elections in 2003 Even failed.
