Benzelrath

Benzelrath , formerly also called Neu-Benzelrath , is the smallest district of Frechen in the Rhein-Erft district . It is located in the center of Frechen and has 1,144 inhabitants (as of January 31, 2007) .

history

Today's (New) Benzelrath arose from the relocation of the excavated place (Alt-) Benzelrath , which was about 1.5 km further south-west on the old Dürener Straße in the area of ​​the Sibylla mine field . When the Sibylla mine was to be merged with other mines to form the Frechen open- cast mine in the middle of the 20th century , the location stood in the way of expansion. In 1954, the settlement was therefore relocated to the outskirts of Frechen, beyond the Frechener Jump to the lignite-free area and then the old town was dredged together with Benzelrath Castle . A total of 404 people from 61 houses were resettled. In Neu-Benzelrath, many of the residents moved to the Am Hang settlement . In 2005 the new place already had 350 inhabitants.

Benzelrath Castle

The castle is mentioned for the first time in 1406 with the Junkers Rutger and Johann von Bentzenrode, it was then owned by the Bottenbroich monastery and finally owned by the Cologne families. The Franz Hohenschutz family sold the castle to the Roddergrube around 1920 . The two-story plastered brick building of the manor house from 1617 with two curved stepped gables and a narrow four-sided tower at the eastern corner was last preserved . The moats were already filled in.

The next motorway junctions are “Frechen” and “Hürth” on the A1 and “Frechen-Nord” on the A4 .

Several bus lines serve Benzelrath in through traffic and thus connect Benzelrath with Kerpen-Horrem , Bergheim and Frechen.

The terminus of line 7 of the Cologne tram is on the eastern edge of Benzelrath . A trip to Cologne city ​​center is possible in 35 minutes with modern low-floor vehicles . The line leads to Zündorf on the right bank of the Rhine from Cologne.

Benzelrath is known to railway enthusiasts for the Cologne – Frechen railway line , the predecessor of Line 7.

From 1896 to 1978 the initially meter-gauge Benzelrath – Nörvenich line of the Bergheimer Kreisbahn existed , which was then taken over in 1913 by the Prussian State Railways . The extension from Oberbolheim to Nörvenich was built in 1924 by the Düren district railway .
