Career

Juniors

Evan McGrath began his career in 2001 with his hometown club Oakville Blades in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League , before moving to the high-class Ontario Hockey League for the Kitchener Rangers in 2002 . McGrath had a good rookie season with 16 goals and 31 assists in 64 league games. In the playoffs , the Rangers made it to the final of the J. Ross Robertson Cup , where they were finally successful against the Ottawa 67’s . The big success followed shortly afterwards when they won the Canadian Junior Championship for the Memorial Cup . In the second season, McGrath's performances stagnated and he couldn't prove that he had moved on. By the middle of the season he was ranked 15th among the North American outfield players available for the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the NHL's talent scouts . However, he slipped further and further back in the rankings until the draft and was finally selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the fourth round at position 128.

In the 2004/05 season he was able to improve significantly and after 23 games he had already collected 40 points scorer. In the second half of the season, however, he was handicapped by an ankle injury and finally came to 87 points after 68 games, making him the top scorer of the Rangers. In the playoffs, the team moved to the final of the Western Conference and McGrath contributed seven goals and six assists in the 15 games, while he had to give up the role of top scorer due to his ankle injury to Mike Richards . McGrath had the most successful season among the juniors in 2005/06. With 37 goals and 77 assists, he led the Rangers and finished fifth in the league's scorer rating with 114 points. However, his performance in the playoffs declined and he only got four points in five games against the underdog Owen Sound Attack , who won the series.

American Hockey League

In the fall of 2006, McGrath moved to the Grand Rapids Griffins , the farm team of the Detroit Red Wings from the American Hockey League . He had a difficult debut season as he could not transfer his scorer skills from his junior days to the senior game. At times he was sent to the Toledo Storm from the ECHL , where he showed very good performance, but he scored 59 AHL games only six goals in eight assists.

In the 2007/08 season , McGrath was not able to develop into a top performer at first, but was able to improve over the course of the season. Especially in the second half of the season he convinced with 22 points scorer in the last 30 league games, but the Griffins missed the playoffs quite clearly. For the new season he initially lost his regular place in the team, but was able to win it back through convincing performances and presented himself as one of the most constant offensive forces in the Griffins squad over the course of the season. In an attack formation with Francis Paré and Francis Lemieux , he denied his best professional season to date and developed into an important support within the team. In the 2009/10 season he was assistant captain of the Griffins, but remained well below its previous year's figures and was also used in 15 games for the Syracuse Crunch .

Europe

For the 2010/11 season he signed a contract with the Swedish second division club VIK Västerås HK , before he was on the ice between 2011 and 2013 for the league rivals IK Oskarshamn as assistant captain . In April 2013 McGrath was signed by Frölunda HC in the Svenska Hockeyligan , but switched again to VIK Västerås HK during the current season in February 2014. As of October 2015, the attacker played again for IK Oskarshamn before the season 2015/16 in the Swiss National League B to HC Thurgau went. During the season he also booked a playoff assignment for HC Davos in the NLA after he had been given a B license by the HCD.

In April 2016, the EC VSV signed McGraths from the Austrian Ice Hockey League for one year. After the end of the 2016/17 season, McGrath did not receive a new contract offer.

On July 18, 2017, Adler Mannheim from the German Ice Hockey League provided McGrath with a one-month trial contract, at the end of which, however, there was no firm commitment. A few days later he was signed by the cooperation partner Kassel Huskies .
