Bledius bicornis is a beetle from the family of the short-winged (Staphylinidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 5 to 6 millimeters. Their body is predominantly black in color, the antennae , legs and wings are yellow, the latter usually being darker in color along the seam . The pronotum is often rust-red in color. No horn is formed on the pronotum in either sex. The sides and the front edge of the head shield are slightly curved, although this is often indistinctly the case in the center of the front. The pronotum has angular front angles. The male has a plate-shaped horn above the compound eyes, the female has an angular lamella at this point.

Occurrence and way of life

The species inhabits salty habitats, especially in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions. The main distribution includes the Mediterranean coasts from Greece to Spain and from Egypt to Algeria. The species is absent on the Atlantic coast, but occurs on the English Channel and the North Sea coast. Inland they are found in salty areas in southern Siberia and Russia, as well as in parts of Eastern Europe. The species is also widespread around Lake Neusiedl .
