Bledius is a genus of beetles from the family of the ruffflies (Staphylinidae) within the subfamily Oxytelinae . It occurs in Europe with 92 species in several subgenera, 47 are also common in Central Europe.

features

The small beetles have a cylindrical body shape. The pronotum is separated from the wings by a short stem-shaped extension . The antennae are kneeled and have a long basal phalanx. The scutellum is not inserted between the wings. The tarsi have three limbs, the rails ( tibia ) are thorny. The thorns of the front rails are typical of the species and its burrowing way of life. The species are difficult to distinguish from one another.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals live both as larvae and as adults on sandy and loamy banks of water and dig passages that can be recognized by small bumps on the surface of the sand or mud. They inhabit flat terrain as well as steep walls. When disturbed, they come out, but quickly fly away. They resemble the beetles of the genus Heterocerus in their way of life . They probably feed on algae. On warm evenings, they rave about and like to come to artificial light sources.
