The common short-winged flyingfly ( Bledius gallicus , syn .: B. fracticornis ) is a beetle from the family of the short-winged flying species (Staphylinidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 4 to 4.5 millimeters and have a black colored body. The upper wings are less often red-brown in color, while the seam and the base are usually darker in color. The base of the antennae is yellow-red.

Occurrence and way of life

The species occurs in the Palearctic , in Europe, large parts of Central Asia to Manchuria and Transbaikalia and in North America. The species is found to the north as far as Lapland . In the Alps, the species is rarer at higher altitudes as well as in the foothills of the Alps and the valleys, otherwise the species is common and widespread everywhere. The animals live in muddy and silty waters as well as in sand and gravel pits in damp and loamy places, and occasionally in damp fields and dirt roads. The adults swarm from March to October, the adults of the new generation can be found from August.
