Leopold Sievers (born April 8, 1917 in Hamburg-Bergedorf ; † September 27, 2009 in Hamburg ) was a German writer , reporter and author of historical books. In 1961 he was awarded a Julius Campe Prize for his novel Onyx .

Childhood and youth

Leo Sievers was the youngest child of Johann Leopold Sievers, engineer and authorized signatory at Hamburgische Electricitäts-Werke AG , and Ottilie Ludolphine Sievers; his brother was Otto Sievers. From 1927 to 1936 he attended the Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hamburg.

He served in the Wehrmacht from 1938 , most recently as a lieutenant in the artillery .

From June 3, 1946 to March 31, 1948 Leo Sievers studied at the Building School of the City of Hamburg (technical college for structural engineering, civil engineering and surveying) ; he completed his studies as an engineer for structural engineering. From 1948 to 1954 he then worked as an architect , u. a. in Frankfurt am Main .

Writer and journalist

Since the early 1950s he has been writing features for the FAZ, Die Zeit and the Süddeutsche Zeitung. In 1954 he received a scholarship from Bertelsmann Verlag and in 1955 the Bertelsmann Novella Prize for his work "Serpentinen" . Following his Bertelsmann scholarship, he gave up his work as an architect in 1955 and worked exclusively as a journalist and book author. He started his journalistic career at Hörzu (1955–1961).

His novel Onyx , published by Hoffmann and Campe in 1962 , was awarded the Julius Campe Prize in 1961.

From 1961 he worked for Stern magazine at the Gruner + Jahr publishing house . In Stern he published reports with historical reviews, such as the historical series "Napoleon", "Tito" and "The Churchills". Individual historical series such as "Germans and Russians", "The Peasant Wars" and "Jews in Germany" were published as books.
