Jan Melichar (born February 24, 1978 in Třebíč , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who has been an assistant coach at SC Langenthal in the Swiss League since 2019 .
Career
Jan Melichar began his career as a hockey player with the North American junior team Port Hope Buzzards, for which he was active from 1996 to 1998. The defender then made his professional ice hockey debut for the Bakersfield Condors from the West Coast Hockey League in the 1998/99 season . During his rookie year , he moved to the Topeka Scarecrows from the Central Hockey League . With these he also began the following season before he was used in the further course of the season for the Fort Wayne Komets in the United Hockey League and HC Ytong Brno from his Czech homeland in the third-class 2nd division. After a year break he received a contract with HC Kometa Brno for the 2001/02 season from the first division , the second Czech division. At the same time he ran for HC Žďár nad Sázavou in the 2nd league, in which he was on the ice from 2003 to 2005 for HC Blansko after another year without ice hockey .
From 2005 to 2010 Melichar played in the English Premier Ice Hockey League , first for four years for the Bracknell Bees and then for one season with the Slough Jets . With the latter he was in the 2009/10 season playoff champions of the English second division. For the 2010/11 season , the Czech received a trial contract with the newly founded Slovak club HC Lev Poprad from the Continental Hockey League . Since this did not take up the game, Melichar returned to the EPIHL and was committed by the Swindon Wildcats .
From the 2014/15 season, Melichar was employed by EHC Freiburg , where he worked as a junior coach and assistant coach for the second division team. In December 2019 he took over the position of head coach from Leo Sulak and led the team to stay in the DEL2 .
