Matthew Shaw (born October 11, 1965 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is a retired American ice hockey player and current coach . He is currently an assistant coach at the University of North Dakota . Before that, he worked as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Wild , San Jose Sharks and New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League .
Career
Matt Shaw only appeared as a hockey player while in college . Between 1985 and 1989 he completed 138 games for the United States International University and Colorado College in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . The defender shared the captaincy in Colorado with two other players.
Following his final college season, Shaw moved to the coaching staff of Colorado College and worked there for the next three years as an assistant coach. There he was mainly responsible for organizing the training and recruiting new players. After the end of his activity in the spring of 1992, the American could not find a job for the following three years. It was only when Brad Buetow , whom he had already assisted at college for the last two years, took over the head coach position of the Quad City Mallards from the Colonial Hockey League , that he brought him back as his assistant. While Buetow only held the post in Quad City for one season, Shaw stayed there for another season and won the Colonial Cup under the direction of new coach John Anderson at the end of the 1996/97 season . Following the success Shaw was first offered a position as head coach for the 1997/98 season, whereupon he supervised the Mobile Mysticks in the East Coast Hockey League that season . With the Mysticks he reached the first playoff round, but he left the team after only one year. Shaw then worked again for a year as an assistant coach with the Chicago Wolves from the International Hockey League . The then Turner Cup title holder was trained by John Anderson that game year. But here, too, Shaw only stayed a year and returned to the Quad City Mallards for the 1999/2000 season, where he was head coach for a year. As the best team of the regular season, he won the Tarry Cup with the Mallards and led it to the final of the Colonial Cup, where it was defeated by the Flint Generals .
For the 2000/01 season Shaw joined the Houston Eros from the IHL, who were trained by Dave Barr at this time . This left the franchise , which was included in the American Hockey League in the summer of 2001 , after a season. Todd McLellan took over the team as the new coach . Shaw and McLellan worked together for the next four years in the Texas metropolis and won the Calder Cup at the end of the 2002/03 season . In 2005 McLellan left Houston and was replaced by Rob Daum , under whom Shaw worked for another two years. For the 2007/08 season , the American was finally promoted and worked from then on under Jacques Lemaire for the Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League . He filled this post until the end of the 2008/09 season , before the entire coaching staff was relieved of their duties. Since Minnesota hired an assistant coach Todd Richards, Todd McLellans, he brought him in return for his team, the San Jose Sharks from the NHL. In addition to Trent Yawney and Jay Woodcroft , he has been working there since the beginning of the 2009/10 season as one of three assistant coaches. His main tasks are working with strikers, power play formations and face-off tactics .
