Ľuboš Velebný (born February 9, 1982 in Zvolen , Czechoslovakia ) is a German - Slovak ice hockey player who has been playing for EV Füssen since January 2017 .

Career

Ľuboš Velebný began his career in the youth teams of HKm Zvolen , before he made his debut in the top division of Slovakia for Zvolen's men's team in the 1999/2000 season; already in the previous season 1998/99 he made his debut in the second men's team with play in the second highest ice hockey league in the country . After he was selected at the NHL Entry Draft 2000 by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the seventh round in 223rd place, he moved to North America to the Waterloo Black Hawks in the United States Hockey League , the best youth league in the United States.

The following season he moved to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and initially played for the London Knights . Since he was not very successful there, he went on the ice for the Belleville Bulls from the middle of the season and scored 24 points scorer in 24 OHL games. In the summer of 2002 he got his first professional contract with the Quad City Mallards from the United Hockey League , but completed most of the season for the Kalamazoo Wings .

Since Velebný could not prevail in North America, he returned to Europe in 2003 to HKm Zvolen and played both for the first team in the extra league , as well as for the second team in the second-class first division . While he was mostly entrusted with defensive tasks in the extra league, he was also able to set offensive accents in the 1 league. In the playoffs of the 2004/05 season he scored 16 points in 14 playoff games in the 1st division, while he did not reach a single point in 44 extraliga games in the same season.

In the summer of 2007 Velebný moved to Germany to ESV Kaufbeuren, with whom he reached the playoff quarter-finals of the league . There the ESVK was eliminated from the Dresdner Eislöwen, which signed him in May 2008. After a year in Dresden, the Slovak moved back to North America to the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the International Hockey League . There he played all preparation games, but could not stay in the USA due to passport problems, so his contract was dissolved and Velebný returned to Europe.

In November 2009 he was signed by the MHC Martin . After two years he left the team and joined league rivals HK Poprad for the 2011/12 season . In the same year the change to the Hungarian club Dunaújvárosi Acélbikák was announced at the end of October , with whom he competed in a total of three different league competitions ( Nationalliga , MOL Liga and OB I. Bajnokság ) this season. On June 21, 2012, the transfer to the German top division club EC Peiting was finally confirmed, with his contract being extended for another year after one year. So he completed the 2012/13 season with Peiting , in which he was the "Most Penalized Player", ie the player with the most penalty minutes, of the Oberliga Süd. He had taken it to 163 penalty minutes in 34 main round missions. Also in the 2013/14 season , the Slovak was in the service of EC Peiting, for which he went on the ice in 41 main round games and with 107 penalty minutes was again almost conspicuous as in the previous game year.

As the EC Peiting announced on May 25, 2014, Ľuboš Velebný's contract was not renewed, after which he left the club after two years. Only one month later, the Frankfurt Löwen's league team announced the signing of the now 32-year-old Slovak. After just one month on the Main, Velebný announced his departure after the game against Ratinger Ice Aliens and his return to Peiting for private reasons. After being out of a club for almost a month and a half, the Tölzer Löwen announced the signing of the 188 cm tall Slovak. After the 2015/16 season, his contract was no longer renewed.

Ľuboš Velebný has been under contract with EV Füssen since January 2017 and made it through the promotion from the regional league to the Bayern league and from there to the top league in 2019. He also received German citizenship in 2017.

International

Ľuboš Velebný has participated in several international title fights in the junior division: for the U18 national team of Slovakia he took part in the U18 World Cup in 1999 and 2000 and for the U20 selection of his home country he played in the U20 World Cup in 2001 and 2002 .
