Charles Stephens (born April 5, 1981 in London , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who last played from 2011 to 2016 as a center for the Kölner Haien in the German Ice Hockey League .

Career

Even in his youth, Stephens was considered a great talent, and quite a few votes attested him a career in the North American professional league NHL , which is considered the best in the world. In fact, the center , which was on the ice between 1997 and 2002 for various teams in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League , was selected in the second round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals . After the capital club Stephens did not sign, however, he was drafted again in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft , this time by Colorado Avalanche , for which he completed a total of eight NHL games. Most of the time, the right-handed shooter was used for the Hershey Bears farm team in the AHL and finally moved within the AHL in 2004 in exchange for Dennis Bonvie to the Binghamton Senators , the cooperation partner of the Ottawa Senators . Stephens stayed here for three seasons and in the 2005/06 season he set his personal record in the AHL with 67 points in 80 games.

In 2006 Stephens decided to move to Germany after many players had recommended themselves for the NHL through a commitment in Europe in recent years. Already in his first appearances for the DEG Metro Stars from the German Ice Hockey League he knew how to play convincingly, but collected too many penalty minutes, including some game disciplinary penalties. As Stephens, who was never noticed as an unfair player in North America, emphasized in numerous interviews, it was difficult for him to switch from the extremely physical game of the North American leagues to the DEL, and actions that were considered normal in North America were often interpreted as violations of the rules. However, the Canadian quickly managed to appear more disciplined and reduce the number of his penalties, although his goal scoring suffered as well. After a phase of 21 games, however, the attacker met regularly and often scored decisive hits. His appealing performance meant that his contract, which was limited to the end of the season , was extended by two more years and thus until the end of the 2008/09 season.

In the 2007/08 season , however, Stephens remained far behind the expectations of the sports management and the environment, so that the club and players finally agreed to terminate the contract. For the 2008/09 season , the Canadian was then signed by the Krefeld Penguins , where his contract has now been extended to 2011. After the 2010/11 season , Stephens moved to the Kölner Haien . In January 2013, his contract was prematurely extended to 2014.

In March 2016, Kölner Haie announced that Stephens would not receive a new contract.
