Gregory "Greg" Schmidt (born April 19, 1976 in North Battleford , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Bietigheim Steelers in the 2nd Bundesliga ice hockey on the position of the center until the 2009/10 season .

Career

Greg Schmidt began his career in the Western Hockey League , one of the top three junior leagues in the Canadian Hockey League in Canada. There he quickly developed into one of the top scorers of the Red Deer Rebels - his total of 205 scorer points in three years are still in the top ten of the Rebels. The jump into professional hockey was initially not so successful (he was never drafted) - in the 1998/99 season he only scored seven points in the International Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League .

The three following years that he spent with the South Carolina Stingrays were much more successful . He was able to increase his performance every year, his 18 points scorer in 18 games of the 2000/01 play-offs helped the Stingrays to win the Kelly Cup. His 68 goals and 71 assists in 187 games with 288 penalty minutes can be found in the top ten of the Stingrays.

After this successful time in South Carolina, Schmidt moved to the West Coast Hockey League and the ECHL for one year (76 points in 77 games for the Pee Dee Pride ). Since he was not granted the breakthrough in a higher league, Greg decided to move to Europe to the Lausitzer Füchsen before the 2003/04 season . Here, too, he showed attractive performances and was able to help the Füchse rise to the 2nd Bundesliga, but then played no role in the squad planning for the second division, so he switched to the Schweinfurt Mighty Dogs .

During the 2004/05 season, however, the Mighty Dogs got into financial difficulties, so Greg moved to Dresden before the end of the transition period in January 2005. Both in the championship round and in the play-offs, Schmidt impressed with a brilliant combination game, his eye for the man next to him and an accurate (left) hand. Among other things the team through the reinforcement with Greg Dresdner Eislöwen could be in the play-offs league champions are and the sporting qualification for the 2. Bundesliga create.

The following season was also very successful for Greg, he was always one of the top performers of the team and formed a congenial trio with Mikhail Nemirovsky and Andrej Kaufmann , which was feared by many defenders. After a change in the team before the 2006/07 season , he then played in a row with Daniel Menge and Martin Sekera , which was again the most dangerous attacking formation of the Ice Lions. After relegation in the Oberliga, he moved to the Straubing Tigers in the German Ice Hockey League .

Greg started the DEL season with the Straubing Tigers very successfully in the first row and scored numerous points. However, he was seriously injured several times during the season (knee, back, shoulder), so that he was hardly ever used at the end of the season. On March 4, 2008, the Bietigheim Steelers announced the commitment of Schmidt for the 2008/09 season . At the end of this season Schmidt won the championship title of the 2nd Bundesliga with the Steelers. After the 2009/10 season he left the club and ended his career.
