Raitis Ivanāns (born January 3, 1979 in Riga , Latvian SSR ) is a former Latvian ice hockey player who played on the position of the striker .

Career

Ivanāns began his playing career in the offspring of Dinamo Riga's successor club , the Riga Juniors. In the 1996/97 season he played for the first time for the first team of Juniors in the Latvian Ice Hockey League and the East European Hockey League . A year later he moved to North America to the Flint Generals .

In the following years he played in various minor leagues , a. a. for the Milwaukee Admirals , with whom he won the Calder Cup in the 2003/04 season , and Hershey Bears . On July 16, 2004, he signed a contract with the Montréal Canadiens , which initially used him with the Hamilton Bulldogs .

He played his first NHL game on October 8, 2005 against the Toronto Maple Leafs , which were defeated 5-4.

Already in his second game Ivanāns, who is known for his tough style of play and is also known as an enforcer , was involved in a fist fight with Zdeno Chára . During this fight he suffered a fracture of the cheekbone . After surviving an injury, he was used again for the rest of the season with the Bulldogs.

On July 13, 2006, before the start of the 2006/07 season , he signed a one-year contract as a free agent with the Los Angeles Kings, for which he scored his first NHL goal against the Dallas Stars on October 12, 2006 . On March 18, 2007, he signed a contract extension for another year. A year later he was given a two-year contract that tied him to the Kings until the end of the 2009/10 season.

After this contract he was signed by the Calgary Flames for two years. Due to several injuries, however, he missed a large part of the following two game years and completed only 2 NHL and 27 AHL appearances during this period. In May 2012 he returned to Europe and received a two-year contract with Dinamo Riga , which was terminated after the 2012/13 season. After that, the Latvian ended his active career.

International

Ivanāns played in two tournaments, the B-Junior World Championship in 1999 and the Men's World Championship in 2008 , for the Latvian national ice hockey team .
