Richard Riccardo "Bibi" Torriani (born October 1, 1911 in St. Moritz ; † September 3, 1988 in Chur ) was a Swiss ice hockey player and coach .

Career

Richard Torriani moved from EHC St. Moritz to HC Davos in 1929 . He took the nickname "Bibi" with him, which he received as the youngest child in his family. From 1933 he formed the so-called “ni” storm at HC Davos together with Hans Cattini and his brother Ferdinand “Pic” Cattini . The term ni-storm came from the common final syllable -ni of the surname of the three players. The “ni” storm was considered the parade line for HC Davos and the Swiss national team for about a decade and a half . As a HC Davos player, he won 18 Swiss championship titles between 1930 and 1950.

Torriani made his first appearance at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , when he won the bronze medal with the Swiss national team. He repeated this success in 1948 , again in St. Moritz, this time together with his partners in the “ni” line. At the opening of this Olympic Winter Games, Torriani was given the honor of taking the Olympic oath .

At world championships he won one silver and five bronze medals. In 1935 and 1939 Torriani won the European Championship. In addition, five silver and two bronze EM medals belong to his palmarès . In the national team Bibi Torriani played 111 international matches and scored 105 goals. Torriani also took part in the 1957 Luge World Championships in Davos and won the silver medal with the single-seater.

After his active career, Bibi Torriani worked as a coach. Among other things, he was national coach for Switzerland and Italy. His club teams as coach included HC Davos and EHC Visp , with which he won the Swiss championship title in 1962.

In 1997 Bibi Torriani was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame .
