Benn Trevor Ferriero (born April 29, 1987 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey player who played 106 games for the San Jose Sharks , New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks in the National between 2005 and 2016 Hockey League on the position of the center .

Career

Ferriero first played between 2001 and 2005 at the Governor Dummer Academy , a high school in Byfield in the US state of Massachusetts . There he has held the position of team captain in recent years . In the summer of 2005, the forward went to Boston College to begin his studies. He also played for the University team in the Hockey East - Division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . In his year as a freshman and rookie , the center played all 42 games of the season and scored 25 points. This helped him to be elected to the all-rookie team of Hockey East at the end of the season.

During the summer break, Ferriero was available in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , where the Phoenix Coyotes selected him in the seventh round in 196th position. In the following game year he was able to increase his number of points by 23 goals and 23 assists to 46 points. Behind Brian Boyle and Nathan Gerbe , he finished the year as the team's third-best scorer and thus had a significant share in winning the Hockey East championship. The 2007/08 season was not quite as successful for Ferriero personally as the previous one, as he collected four points less than the year before. But he was able to celebrate a total of three titles with the college. In addition to winning the prestigious Beanpot Tournament and winning the Hockey East title again, the team also secured the national college championship of the NCAA. The striker was elected to the Hockey East's all-tournament team and was fourth in the internal scorer ranking. In his final college year in the 2008/09 season, he achieved only 26 points scorer.

After completing his fourth year of college, Ferriero failed to come to an agreement on a professional contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, who had drafted him three years earlier. The various media reports on the Coyotes' liquidity problems and the possible change of ownership in summer 2009 also played an important role in the decision. Thus, the San Jose Sharks signed the free agent on September 1st. He signed a two-year contract valid for both the National Hockey League and American Hockey League . In the Sharks' pre-season training camp, the American attracted the attention of the coaching team with five scorer points in five games, which ultimately decided to keep the striker in the NHL squad. At the season opener on October 1, 2009, he made his debut against the Colorado Avalanche .

On July 13, 2012, after three years in San Jose as a free agent , Ferriero signed a two-way contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins . They transferred him to the New York Rangers on January 24, 2013 in exchange for Chad Kolarik . In June 2013, he was given a six- round suffrage in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Justin Falk to the Minnesota Wild .

After the Wild did not submit a contract offer, Ferriero was signed as a free agent by the Vancouver Canucks in July 2013 . For the Canucks, the center was only on the ice twice in the NHL and was otherwise used in the AHL with the Utica Comets . In the summer of 2014 he moved to the St. Louis Blues , who only used him on their farm team, the Chicago Wolves . After the 2014/15 season, Ferriero left North America and joined the EC Red Bull Salzburg in July 2015 . Ferriero's guest appearance in Austria ended at the beginning of December 2015 after 23 appearances and he returned to North America, where he signed a trial contract with the Providence Bruins from the AHL. After seven missions, the parties separated again.

International

Ferriero represented his home country at the 2005 U18 World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic . The team, which also included Phil Kessel , Erik Johnson , Jack Johnson , Nathan Gerbe and Peter Mueller , won the gold medal with a 5-1 final victory over Canada . He himself contributed one goal and three assists in six games over the course of the tournament .
