With the Vienna Capitals Silver and the Steel Wings Linz, two further farm teams from Austrian EBEL clubs have joined the league . The Milan Club Hockey Milano Rossoblu transferred its starting right to the new Club Hockey Club Milano Bears , which did not join the league.
The season is divided into three phases. In the regular season, the teams play against each other in two full rounds - 34 games per team. The first six teams qualify for the championship round and already have a fixed place for the AHL playoffs.
The teams that finish first to sixth in phase 1 play against each other in a round robin to determine the placements for the playoffs. The points from the regular season will not be taken. The team placed first receives four bonus points, the team placed second receives three bonus points, the team placed third receives two bonus points and the team placed fourth receives one bonus point. Teams that are fifth and sixth after the regular season will not receive any bonus points. During the championship round, the six best teams play for the privilege of choosing their quarter-final opponent.
The teams placed in positions seven to 18 are divided into two groups of six teams each in the second phase, the qualifying round. The points from the regular season will not be taken. The best placed team in each group receives four bonus points, the second best three bonus points, the third best two bonus points and the fourth best team one bonus point. The last four teams after the regular season do not receive any bonus point in any group. The two winners of the qualifying round groups secure the last tickets for the playoffs.
Then the playoffs begin with the eight qualified teams playing the champions. The semi-finals are played in "best of five" mode, while the quarter-finals and the final are played in "best of seven" mode.
