Mieczyslaw Kolinski

Mieczyslaw Kolinski (born September 5, 1901 in Warsaw , Poland ; † May 8, 1981 in Toronto , Canada ) was a music ethnologist , music theorist , composer , pianist and music teacher who had to flee Germany from the Nazis in 1933 due to his Jewish descent.

biography

Mieczyslaw Kolinski grew up in Hamburg and went to Berlin to study. There he studied piano and composition at the University of Music and musicology , psychology and anthropology at the university. After the National Socialists came to power, he fled to Czechoslovakia and in 1938 to Belgium.

In 1951 Kolinski went to the USA, where he co-founded the Society for Ethnomusicology and worked as an editor and music therapist. In 1966 he moved to Canada to teach ethnomusicology and acoustics at the University of Toronto .
