Maliina Abelsen

Maliina Bitsch Abelsen (born February 7, 1976 in Hørsholm , Denmark ) is a Greenlandic politician ( Inuit Ataqatigiit / IA ), entrepreneur and sociologist .

Life

Maliina Abelsen is the daughter of the politician Emil Abelsen (1943–2005) and his wife Kirsten Bitsch. She grew up in Nuuk and studied sociology and politics in Denmark and Australia. From 2004 to 2006 she was employed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights . Afterwards she was an agent at the Greenland Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 2008. From 2008 to 2009 she was department coordinator at the MIPI knowledge center for children and boys .

She ran in the 2009 parliamentary elections and was elected to the Inatsisartut as a newcomer with the second most votes among the IA candidates and the fourth most votes overall . There, however, she took leave for the entire legislative period, as she was immediately appointed Minister of Social Affairs and Family. In 2010 she survived a vote of no confidence. In 2011, when the government was restructured, she was appointed Minister of Finance and Minister for Nordic Cooperation. In the parliamentary election in spring 2013 , she was re-elected to Inatsisartut with the second most votes from the Inuit Ataqatigiit and the third most votes overall.

She resigned from parliament in June to accept a position as project manager for the Arctic Winter Games 2016. In the same year she was named Greenland Woman of the Year. In 2016 she became a director at Air Greenland . In 2019 she resigned.
