Christian Burchard (born May 17, 1946 in Hof , Bavaria ; † January 17, 2018 ) was a German multi-instrumentalist and composer . He played vibraphone , drums , santur and organ .

Career

Burchard first received classical piano lessons before he switched to the trombone and then discovered jazz and the vibraphone . He was initially active as a jazz musician in the 1960s, founded the Contemporary Trio with Dieter Serfas and Edgar Hoffmann and toured with Mal Waldron . In 1969 he switched to drums and founded the fusion group Embryo with Edgar Hoffmann , with whom he mostly played. Occasionally he also performed with Missus Beastly and Checkpoint Charlie . He was considered one of the pioneers of world music in Europe. In 2008 he and his band Embryo received the German Ruth World Music Prize at the TFF in Rudolstadt . With Okay Temiz , Arto Tunçboyacıyan and Ramesh Shotham he performed under the band name Ethno Leaders .

In the summer of 2016, at the age of 70, Burchard suffered a stroke that ended his active music career. His daughter Marja (* 1985) then took over his role in the band. He died on January 17, 2018.
