Torbjorn Hultcrantz

Johan Torbjörn Hultcrantz (* 2. May 1937 in Stockholm ; † 18th January 1994 ) was a Swedish double bass player of the modern jazz .

Life

Hultzcrantz, who grew up in Bromma , first received piano lessons from his mother, a professional piano teacher. It was not until he was 18 that he began to play bass. As early as 1956 he was a member of Lars Gullin's band , with whom he recorded as well as with Åke Persson and the ensemble of Jazz Club 57 . In the early 1960s he performed with the pianist Lasse Werner , who formed the Swedish Jazz Quartet with Bernt Rosengren . In the next few years he accompanied, mostly with Sune Spångberg , traveling Americans such as Bud Powell , Dexter Gordon ( The Rainbow People ) or Stan Getz ( In Sweden 1958−60 ), as well as Don Cherry and Albert Ayler ( The First Recordings ) which he explored the beginnings of free jazz .

Since 1968 he has also played in Bernt Rosengren's quartet , which also included saxophonist Tommy Koverhult and drummer Leif Wennerström . He also accompanied Nanie Porres , Torgny Björk and Claes-Göran Fagerstedt . He was also a member of Stefan Isaksson's quartet and Krister Andersson's Gyllene Skiva, with whom the album About Time was created (released in 1993). In 1978 he became a member of Per Henrik Wallin's trio , which had been on the road for ten years.
