Per Henrik Wallin (born July 17, 1946 in Karlsborg , † June 15, 2005 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish jazz pianist , big band leader and composer. In terms of his importance for the pianistic development of free improvisational music in Europe, he is compared to Fred Van Hove and Misha Mengelberg .

Live and act

At the end of the 1950s he was introduced to jazz music by his father, an officer. He was particularly influenced by Thelonious Monk , Art Tatum and Bud Powell and mixed music from various sources in free improvisation, not just jazz. Wallin has recorded both solo and in a trio and with his own big band (Per Henrik Wallin and his Gang) , starting in 1975 on the Dragon label with his own trio, which he played with the alto saxophonist Lars-Göran Ulander and on arrival in Stockholm in the mid-1970s the drummer Peter Olsen . In 1978 he formed a new trio with Torbjörn Hultcrantz on bass and Erik Dahlbäck on drums, with whom he played for ten years. At that time he toured the rest of Europe with his trio. In the 1980s he also began composing for big bands. In 1988 he suffered a serious car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. It was not until 1995 that he began to play the piano again (without using the pedal and thus dynamically restricted), but made a particularly strong impression with big band recordings. Before his death, he released a solo album.

He also played with drummer Sven-Åke Johansson , Eje Thelin and Jonas Kullhammar (in his big band), who had been friends since childhood .

In 2003 he was awarded the Django d'Or as a Contemporary Star of Jazz . For Tiveden he received the Gyllene Skivan of the Orkesterjournals in 2002 .
