John C. Marshall

John C. Marshall (born April 17, 1941 in London , † September 2, 2012 in Düsseldorf , Germany ) was a British guitarist , singer and songwriter in the styles of jazz and blues .

John C. Marshall came from a family of musicians; his grandfather was a music teacher for guitar, banjo and harp, his father played the banjo, guitar and piano. The family organized weekly music evenings, in which the boy was involved from a very early age. As a teenager he played guitar in various bands in the pubs of the north of London.

In the mid-1960s, Marshall left England to go to Paris . There he met the American drummer Alvin Sykes , a nephew of Cab Calloway , with whose band he toured all of Europe for several years. This was followed by numerous appearances for the American Special Services (Entertainment) as an accompanying guitarist for many American artists who appeared to entertain the troops. For Big Mama Thornton , Ben E. King and Brook Benton, among others .

In 1972 he settled in Amsterdam for a few years to take part in the very active jazz scene. Here he played with Rosa King , Hans Dulfer , Slide Hampton , Chet Baker and Dave Kamien, among others . During this time he repeatedly appeared as an accompanying guitarist for American artists who went on tour in Europe - including Ray Charles , Aretha Franklin and Gene "Mighty Flea" Conners .

He became known to the German television audience in 1979 as a regular guitarist in the WDR series "Let's Swing" - under the musical direction of Dave Kamien. In 1981 Marshall became one of the founding members of the Olympic Rock & Blues Circus - along with Chris Farlowe , Pete York , Colin Hodgkinson and Brian Auger , who was replaced a short time later by Jon Lord . In 1982 he founded the band "Step'In Out" with keyboardist Chris Lazenby. The debut album Another Happy Customer received high press reviews and was a respectable sales success. It was re-released in 2010 and is very popular in Japan.

In the mid-1980s he founded the John Marshall Band , also known as JMB , which performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival and can still be seen today as the John C. Marshall Band in various line-ups. From 1993 to 1995 he was a soloist in the RTL Big Band, for which he also arranged and with which he recorded the album "R&B Party". During this time I also worked with the Dutch acid jazz band Advanced Warning - together with keyboardist Herbert Noord, saxophonist Rinus Groeneveld and Focus drummer Pierre van der Linden .

From 2000 he took part in various blues and jazz projects, including a. with Pia Fridhill , AG Weinberger , Gregory Gaynair , Men At Jazz and as musical director of the Big Band Friends from Düsseldorf. Marshall lived in Düsseldorf until his death and was active in various jazz formations. He died on September 2, 2012 after a heart attack .
