Doug Sides

Douglas Joseph "Doug" Sides (* 10. October 1942 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz - drummer .

Sides took piano lessons from the age of four and switched to drums at the age of 17. After studying at the Berklee School of Music and at the Boston Conservatory, he worked as a professional jazz musician, from the late 1960s a. a. with Lionel Hampton , John Handy , Abbey Lincoln , Jon Hendricks , Joe Henderson , Sonny Stitt , Blue Mitchell , Bobby Hutcherson , Kirk Lightsey , Chick Corea , Sweets Edison , Cedar Walton , Phineas Newborn , Kai Winding and Clark Terry . In the late 1980s he moved to Europe, where he played with Johnny Griffin , Horace Parlan , Don Bennett ( Solar , 1995) and Kirk Lightsey; he also toured with Ranee Lee and Hank Jones . In his later years he worked with Benny Golson and Phil Woods ' project Bird with Strings… and more , as well as his own band projects with which he released several albums, such as Sumblo (Laika, 1987) and Perseverance (1990). In the field of jazz he was involved in 36 recording sessions between 1962 and 2010, apart from the aforementioned with Curtis Amy ( Katanga , 1963), Dollar Brand , Sathima Bea Benjamin , Joe van Enkhuizen , Walter Bishop junior , John Marshall , Ricky Ford , Charles Owens , Dusko Goykovich , Lou Rawls and Ted Curson .
