Pierre van der Linden (born February 19, 1946 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch jazz drummer.

Live and act

Van der Linden is influenced as a drummer by Max Roach , Sunny Murray and especially Elvin Jones . In the 1960s he worked with the guitarist Jan Akkerman in bands such as Friendship Quartet , Johnny and the Cellar Rockers , The Hunters and Brainbox (including with Kaz Lux ), but also in other Dutch bands such as After Tea , Tee Set and ZZ and the Maskers . From 1970 he was a member of the group Focus , a progressive rock band with international success. He became known, among other things, for his drum solo in Hocus Pocus . After arguments about the commercial direction of Focus in the direction of mainstream , van der Linden left the band in 1973.

He became a member of the Dutch group Trace around keyboardist Rick van der Linden and bassist Jaap van Eyck . Pierre and Rick have the same last name but are not related.

After his successor Colin Allen had left Focus, he returned to the band for a short time in 1975. He recorded the solo album Eli with Jan Akkerman in 1976 and Akkerman's song Floatin ' (1977). With Jasper van't Hof and the band Sweet d'Buster , he recorded the album Out of the Blue in 1980 . In the 1990s he turned to free improvisation with Wilbert de Joode and Rinus Groeneveld, playing acid jazz with Advanced Warning . Since 2004 van der Linden has been playing again with the organist and flautist Thijs van Leer at Focus.
