Surname

Metairie was first settled by the French in the late 18th century along an area called Metairie Ridge, a natural dam formed by a bayou . This became a kind of street settlement called "Metairie Road" . An electric tram was introduced around 1920 to travel along Metairie Road and help develop the area. A little later the expensive land on the roadside was built; the area is now known as the Old Metairie and is the most prestigious neighborhood in the area. The rest of the area was not settled until after the Second World War.
