Metairie is a settlement on community-free area in Jefferson Parish in the US -amerikanischen State Louisiana and suburb of New Orleans . For statistical purposes, the politically dependent place was designated as a census-designated place (CDP) . In 2010 , Metairie had 138,481 residents.
Surname
The original spelling, Métairie, is a French term for a rented farm that the landowner paid for with part of his harvest, as was the custom in this area in the early 19th century.
Geographical data
Metairie is in eastern Jefferson Parish and borders New Orleans to the east, Kenner to the west, Lake Pontchartrain to the north and Airline Highway to the south. The 17th Street Canal forms the border between Metairie and New Orleans.

Metairie is home to the New Orleans Zephyrs baseball team . There are numerous amusement parks , sports facilities and other recreational facilities in the Metairie region . Many of these playgrounds organize sports competitions such as soccer, baseball and basketball. Some parks also have other programs, such as cheap piano lessons. The most famous "playgrounds" are:

history
Metairie was first settled by the French in the late 18th century along an area called Metairie Ridge, a natural dam formed by a bayou . This became a kind of street settlement called "Metairie Road" . An electric tram was introduced around 1920 to travel along Metairie Road and help develop the area. A little later the expensive land on the roadside was built; the area is now known as the Old Metairie and is the most prestigious neighborhood in the area. The rest of the area was not settled until after the Second World War.
Veterans Boulevard became the region's business and commercial center; Metairie's main business district is on Causeway Blvd. found near Lake Pontchartrain . Metairie also has one of the few major shopping centers in New Orleans, the Lakeside Shopping Center.
In the 1970s and early 80s, an area of bars and nightclubs established itself in an area of Metairie known as Fat City. Metairie has a Mardi Gras tradition promoting itself as a more family-friendly version of Mardi Gras .
Like New Orleans, the region was hit by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and was partially destroyed and flooded.
