Michael T. "Mike" Scifres (born October 8, 1980 in Metairie , Louisiana , USA ) is a retired American football player . He played as a punter in the National Football League (NFL), most recently with the San Diego Chargers .

Player career

Scifres studied at Western Illinois University and also played American football there. Due to his playful achievements, he was selected several times as a selection player. In 2003 he was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the fifth round at 149 point drafted . Until 2007 he was able to move into the play-offs three times with his team , a move into the Super Bowl has not yet succeeded. In the 2007 season , the Chargers moved into the AFC Championship Game . But they failed there with 21:12 at the later Super Bowl loser New England Patriots . In the following year, the later Super Bowl winner Pittsburgh Steelers prevailed against the Chargers with 35:24 in the play-offs. He was released on April 30, 2016 after the Chargers informed him that they were drafting Drew Kaser that day.

Off the field

Scifres has founded an organization with Chargers' kicker Nate Kaeding that supports a pension in which families with sick children can live cheaply while the children are treated in a hospital.
