On July 9, 1982, a Boeing 727 crashed on Pan-Am Flight 759 from Miami to Las Vegas with a stopover in New Orleans shortly after taking off from New Orleans International Airport .

The crashed plane was a 14-year-old Boeing 727-235 with the air vehicle registration number N4737, with three Pratt & Whitney JT8D equipped -7B.

The crew consisted of the 45-year-old captain Kenneth McCullers, the 32-year-old first officer Donald Pierce and the 60-year-old flight engineer Leo Noone.

At 4:06 p.m. local time, the Boeing 727 received take-off clearance for runway 10. At 4:08 p.m. the fully loaded aircraft took off and climbed unusually steeply to 100 to 150 feet (30 to 46 meters), then sank despite a 10 ° positive vertical incline, met some trees, rolled to the left and struck at 16:09 finally in Kenner (Louisiana) on. The aircraft and several houses were destroyed or seriously damaged by the impact and the explosion. All 145 inmates and 8 people on the ground died.
root cause
The cause was the entry into wind shear , as a result of which the aircraft first climbed unusually steeply by the headwind , then was pushed down by the downburst and finally had an accident.
