On September 3, 1989, an Ilyushin Il-62 M of Cubana crashed on Cubana flight 9646 from Aeropuerto Internacional José Martí in Cuba with Cologne / Bonn Airport in Germany as its destination. All 126 occupants and 24 people on the ground died in the most serious aircraft accident in Cuba.

plane

The one-year-old Ilyushin Il-62M with the aircraft registration CU-T1281 was equipped with four Solovyov D-30 KU engines and had completed 1,326 flight hours by the time the accident occurred.

Weather

The weather that day was bad. A stormy rain was falling. The sky was covered to 7/8, with the clouds at a height between 540 and 600 m. The last wind check showed that an easterly wind was blowing with 20  knots (37  km / h ) to 26 knots (48 km / h).

Flight history

The plane was scheduled to operate a charter flight from Havana to Milan , Italy , with a scheduled stopover in Cologne / Bonn . The machine took off from runway 05 at 18:56 local time and initially rose to 40 meters. At this height, the pilots retracted the landing gear and reduced the flap position from 30 ° to 15 °. After reaching an altitude of 56 meters, the aircraft suddenly sank until it hit the ILS antennas around 220 meters behind the end of the runway 67 seconds after the start of the take-off run . The plane went up in flames, slid up a hill and shattered into several pieces of debris that hit a residential area. All 126 inmates and 24 people on the ground were killed. A 22-year-old inmate who initially survived died on September 11, eight days after the accident.

root cause

The cause of the crash was wind shear and a downburst. The aircraft was caught by the downburst at a height of 56 meters and pushed down, causing it to hit the ground.
