Destruction after Hurricane Katrina

Grand Isle ( French Grande-Île ) is a place on the island of the same name in the Gulf of Mexico , which belongs to Jefferson Parish in Louisiana . Connected to the mainland by a dam and bridge. Grand Isle is at the western end of Barataria Bay . Grand Isle State Park is also located on the island .

Hurricanes

Grand Isle has been devastated by hurricanes many times during its history: a storm devastated the entire island in 1860, just like the hurricane of 1893. Other hurricanes struck the site in 1909, on September 29, 1915 and on August 22, 1947. Thereafter, in 1956 and in September 1965 Hurricanes Flossy and Betsy hit the island. In 1998 the entire island was flooded by Tropical Storm Frances . Other storms and hurricanes included Tropical Storm Isidore on September 26, 2002, Hurricane Lili , which narrowly missed the island, and Hurricane Cindy on July 5, 2005. The latter caused little damage and erosion on the island's beaches. On August 28 and 29, 2005, the place was hit by Hurricane Katrina , which destroyed most of the houses and campsites as well as the bridge to the mainland. Less than a month later, Hurricane Rita reached the island. On September 1, 2008, Hurricane Gustav reached the island at 169 km / h. It did less damage than Katrina, but was most powerful on the island in Louisiana. While workers were still repairing the destruction of Gustav on the beaches, Hurricane Ike passed the island to the south.
