history

The origins of the city go back to the 19th century at most, from this time, for example, the Gurdon and Fort Smith Railroad building still exists. The construction of this railway line began in 1905. The city was officially founded in 1909. It was added by the Caddo River Lumber Company , which in 1907 built a large rolling mill on what is now the city area. Other companies quickly settled on the railway line and around the depot, and further rolling mills were built. As a result, the two businessmen Curt Hays and Will Fagan created the new parish of Glenwood .

A few years later, the Memphis, Dallas & Gulf Railroad also built a new rail line between Glenwood and Hot Springs . This made the city an important railroad crossing and one of the centers of the timber industry south of the Ouachita Mountains . The city grew rapidly when the AL Clark Lumber Company built its own residential town for its employees. In 1922 the Caddo River Lumber Company bought this company and the residential complex. When a devastating fire destroyed most of this factory complex in 1936, the company decided to move to Oregon . This decision also affected many local families who left the city.

In 1942 a new manganese processing company was founded in the west of the city. The city experienced its second boom, benefiting from scarce mercury supplies in the Second World War . In the 1970s, the Curt Bean Lumber Company , one of the largest independent lumber producers in the United States, set up a rolling mill in the city. In 1994 the Glenwood Golf Club & Lodge was founded.
